Prologue

From all the pleasures life offers, finding meaning in your day-to-day work has to be one of the most profound. Knowing that your day’s activities, however small or seemingly insignificant, contribute to your highest vision for the world is deeply satisfying. Without it, life can still be great, but there will always be something missing, an itch that won’t go away, however hard you scratch it with worldly means.

One of the main objections to Bitcoin is the enormous amount of electricity it consumes during its mining. Critics claim that Bitcoin mining equals or even surpasses the electricity consumption of entire countries. It is indeed true, as we can see in the following chart from November 2023, Bitcoin mining consumed more energy per year than, for example, the entire country of Norway, Pakistan or Ukraine.

Introduction

During 2023, I noticed that some of my favorite bitcoiners, people overflowing with personal integrity like Lyn Alden and Jeff Booth, were attending an international conference called the Oslo Freedom Forum. This is an annual conference that aims to create a space for dissidents, artists, journalists, and freedom fighters from around the world to meet and share experiences and tools that help them fight oppression in their home countries. It’s important to realize that 70% of humanity today lives under the oppression of totalitarian regimes. You read that correctly, 5.6 billion people are less free than you.
